Let’s get topside for this post with a salute to regreening, reclamation and sustainability. I have seen and captured some amazing achievements in these divisions from biosolids management to large scale nurseries. I might photograph a lot of hard rock scenarios, but clean and green is also a huge part of the process and captures.

The Rokion R400 Battery Electric Ramp Truck line-up includes 6, 9 & 12 passenger crew trucks. These vehicles are built from the ground up at their core facility located in the Canadian Prairies. If I manage to take my cross Country Motorcycle trip to the West coast again this summer, I might just have to take a side tour for a facility tour.

I captured this portrait of Don Toporowski for his profile (and other uses) after we finished with our creative photography session for RockMass Technologies.
Some factors I consider when creating these profile portraits:
– I tend to capture them horizontal to show the surrounding environment if used in other media besides a profile
– I leave enough space so the image can be cropped vertical for profile templates
– use lighting from background equipment (when possible) &drag the shutter for the exposure.
– Capture the smiling, serious and in between facial expressions (all have their uses).
This is what I call my “standard portrait” and after setup will only take a few seconds to capture a few portraits like this.
Thanks Don and the rest of the crew at RockMass for that opportunity to create.

My last session of 2020 was with MacLean Engineering at their R&D Facility creating images of this BEV Shotcrete Sprayer. Among many features, the field of view through the cab window was something that stood out and I thought of an angle that would easily showcase it.
E&MJ Magazine (Engineering And Mining Journal) features a great article called “The Year Mining Went Electric” by Carly Leonida including a few images from MacLean Engineering.

This is one portrait I have been looking forward to for years. The name Greg Major always puts a smile on my face when I hear it, especially when I see him face to face greeting him with the words “Mr. Major, how are you?”.
Greg Major is the Director of Norcat’s Underground Center where I have photographed dozens of times over the years. The Norcat Crew have always been a staple of professionalism, courtesy and organization. Over the years I have tried to get him in front of my camera for a few minutes when I was on site, but when you have a mine to run, you are a busy person, or maybe he just doesn’t like having his picture taken………lol. When Greg finally called and asked if I had some time to update his portrait I replied “Finally!” & “Anything for you my friend.”
I knew the portrait would be simple, one of my “Hodgins Signature Portraits” as some of you have come to call them. Get him in front of the camera, have him smile his smile and you will easily see his personality. For those of you that know him, you know what I mean. I tip my hard hat to you Mr. Major.
Greg has a long list of credibility under his hardhat along with the Norcat staff you can be assured that your experience at the facility will be efficient, productive and safe. You can read more of Greg’s accomplishments off the Norcat.org/team.html page.
Congratulations to Pure Gold Mining Inc (www.puregoldmining.com) on their successful first gold pour. It truly has been a great experience for me to watch and photograph the different stages of the mine development.
Congratulations as well to the staff, contractors, friends and family who have had a part in making Pure Gold a success story in the Mining World and I thank you all for allowing me to document some of the steps along the way.

Vale’s Coleman Mine celebrated 50 years this past Thursday. Some of my first underground images were created at the mine. I saw my first Kiruna truck, ore vein and jumbo drill that first year in 2008. Congratulations everyone at Coleman for 50 year success.
