Even after 26 years I still have to prove myself every time I am on the job. One time when I was on site going through orientation I was asked “Your a mining photographer? So what projects have you worked on?” I replied “These past few years have photographed for multiple mining companies and equipment manufacturers throughout multiple Countries. The images are then used for websites, social media, product brochures and annual reports.”
“Ok, but what specific projects have worked on?” and it was the tone that said “I am not convinced, what qualifies you to be here.”
This is why I have all used client images on my phone, so I can quickly scan through the images that are relevant to what I am about to photograph, to give me credibility that I can do the job to their satisfaction, to gain their confidence.
This is the exact same reason why you should have great imagery showcasing your product or service. Everyone will scrutinize it and question it so always put your best foot forward and present your work with your chin held high.

I get contacted a lot from trade magazines inquiring about the images I create for my clients. More often than not it’s in regards to an article they are featuring but do not have a sufficient image to accompany the article. I ask each of them what their criteria is for a cover photo or feature photo and the majority all say, “something that stands out”. It’s the “PHOTO” that makes the cover. Each time your company has a write up in a trade magazine your company has a chance to be on the cover and it depends on the image that is provided.
Online articles are another key resource to getting your company, equipment, service featured as a headline. If you know you are going to be featured make sure you are prepared to provide imagery that will stand out and get readers attention.

The Mining Photog Experience ~ www.miningindustrialphotographer.com/experience
“James, writing a single sentence to capture our photo experience with you is as difficult as having to choose which images you provided us to use in in our promotional material!
Just wanted to send a quick thank you for the amazing job you did at our photo shoot. The attention to detail and images you captured are beyond our expectation! We look forward to working with you again.”

We created a series of images at Equipment North’s new test ramp last week. When Sudbury Mining Solutions Journal featured Equipment North in their latest article (https://www.sudburyminingsolutions.com/the-drift/the-drift-boosting-vehicle-safety-underground-one-vehicle-at-a-time-3935031) EN had custom creative images on hand to accommodate the article and many more.

Photographed a series of images with Epiroc’s new BEV Boltec earlier this year before it made it’s way to a customers site.

This is the first year since 2012 that I will not be able to attend PDAC and roam the halls meeting and chatting with industry professionals from around the world. I would always kick off my vacation with the PDAC convention looking forward to some networking but more importantly (IMO) hanging out with friends I have made over the years while photographing the industry.
Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend virtually either as I am working throughout the week with clients but here’s to a successful #pdac2021 virtual convention and congratulations to the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) team and everyone involved in their hard work this past year to bring the convention to many more people who could not attend in person. Enjoy the week everyone 🙂
After driving around in the Relay from www.millertechnology.com this looked like a great spot to capture a few more images before we finished for the day . #miningphotog #relay #millertechnology
Some factors I consider when creating these profile portraits:
– I tend to capture them horizontal to show the surrounding environment if used in other media besides a profile
– I leave enough space so the image can be cropped vertical for profile templates
– use lighting from background equipment (when possible) &drag the shutter for the exposure.
– Capture the smiling, serious and in between facial expressions (all have their uses).
This is what I call my “standard portrait” and after setup will only take a few seconds to capture a few portraits like this.
Thanks Don and the rest of the crew at RockMass for that opportunity to create.
