I feel it’s a momentous occasion when the gold bar finally get’s the official punch stamp. One letter at a time each hit with the hammer brings the process closer to completion.
Open pit morning. The sun was starting to break through the morning clouds as the wind pushed them across the site. After a few minutes of watching the trucks come and go the sun broke through again just in time for me to capture it.

The upward climb to the surface after a long day in the warm humid environment of the underground.
Sometimes you wake up and go to work in the dark hours of the morning, work all day in the underground with the minimal light your equipment provide and at the end of the shift when you exit the portal, the sunshine slaps your face and your eyes protest for the briefest moment as they adjust to the ambience of the surface world.
I got asked recently how I manage to create crisp clear mining images in which I replied “I have a good camera.” lol.
The truth is, I am still learning, even after 25+ years of lighting and photographing people. My goal is to illuminate the scene so that it can be captured by the camera sensor without it looking like there is additional lighting but 95% of the time there is additional lighting.
I remember my mentor teaching me about the different elements of lighting, and once it clicked, I viewed everything I saw with different eyes consciously pointing out highlights, shadows, mid-tones and so forth. Studying the works of iconic portrait photographers learning the different lighting patterns and how to create shadows and highlights
Lighting alone has many elements to be considered. The intensity of the light, the quality (soft/hard), the direction of the light, the coverage of space and much more. When we throw in a distinctive subject or subjects, lighting is used to isolate the subject, separate the subject from the background and highlight a specific area within the image…..all without you even knowing it.

One of my favorite images from the RockMass Technologies shoot we did last month balancing the underground environment and technology. Lighting, composition, focal length and depth of field are all in play. You just can’t snapshot an image like this and have the same visual impact.

These 2 images were taken minutes apart while on site in Mexico.
I try to create images that are not “staged” but in my professional experience there has to be some amount of planning for a creative image to be successful. When I “stage” a scenario I am not placing the person in a position they normally would not be in during the process of their job but simply freezing the action/motion that they have placed themselves in during the process of their task…..did you follow that? LOL. In other words, I have them go through the steps of their job and I will see a moment in their process that I think is a good capture……and that is what I then proceed to do at the best of my ability with the elements presented to me at the time.
Throughout the day I will try to capture as many different elements of the site surroundings that I can and while some images take mere seconds to capture others are more complex.

It’s the smiles. Whenever I travel to a country where I don’t speak the language a camera in hand can easily overcome the barrier. Photography in itself is a universal language and holding up the camera, smiling and motioning towards the person, they immediately know your intention. We created some great personal portraits throughout Cuba during this shoot and hopefully some day I can get back to create some new experiences.
Warm colors get more attention.
This is an old image, one that I have resurrected from my archives to play with in post editing. I will often look back on older images with a new perception that I have acquired over the years since capturing it. Would I have done things differently? You bet I would. Things that I can create in post production I now try to create at the time of capture to make to make the image authentic. I very rarely do extensive photoshop to the images but once in awhile I like to test my creativity. See comments for original photo.

Yup, I do take “snapshots” when I am working. . When I am doing a creative shoot I am always scanning my surroundings to see what is going on and if anything could be a possible “candid” moment, just like B roll with video. These images are on the fly available light and are great for social media and annual reports. I really do mean it when I say I try to capture everyone and everything.
Some turn out and some don’t but I always say:
“You never know until you try, and if you fail you are no worse off than before you tried.”
