Of all things I love photographing on the mine site the Jumbo drill takes the cake (until I get to photograph a bucket wheel excavator). For this image below I used a little back lighting to draw more attention to the operator than to the boom arms. This photo was created for Dumas at the Young Davidson Mine in Matachewan.
“James was an absolute pleasure to work with, he is affordable and very accommodating. The photography he produced was exactly what we were looking for, it was high quality and we received our pictures with a short turnaround time. We will definitely hire James again.”

How many of you knew that my logo was created using 3 of my mining industrial images? I wanted to incorporate some of my work into my brand but I obviously lacked the skills to create the artwork, so I hired a professional graphic designer to complete my vision. Here are the 3 images he merged into creating my logo.
On the left is my masterpiece I tried to create before seeking professional help (for the logo) and on the right the finished logo.

Sometimes I get hired by companies to create portraits of their employees doing their jobs. Most workers have never had a picture of them at work, or if they have, it’s a low quality snapshot taken by another employee. I have photographed employees that have been on the job for over 25 years and have never had their portrait created. When I explain to them that this will be different, professional, one that they can take home and show their spouse and kids and say this is what I DO, they get it. When I give them a quick “glance” at the back of my camera they quickly realize that this is special. It means something to them, and it means something that their company wanted this for them. These workers are proud of what they do.
Here is one portrait I created while on location for Ledcor. It was a pleasure to photograph their team as they were professional and courteous.

I seem to make it a habit to grab a few shots of haul trucks while in the passenger seat while driving around the mine site. I find it gives you a very realistic view of the truck in action.

Vale electrician Sarah Hunter was recognized as Northeastern Ontario’s tradeswoman of the year earlier this month at “The Influential Women” of Northern Ontario awards.
Congratulations Sarah.

On my way back from Fairbank lake we flew over the old/new site of KGHM located near the old Victoria Mine site (42 minutes West of Sudbury Ontario). Excavators and haul trucks are working around the clock clearing the site so that construction can start. The estimated time for completion is 2019 and will employee up to 300 employees.

As as I was in the air yesterday I flew (I was in a plane………I can’t really fly) over the new Sudbury Solar Farm located along Old Highway 69 built by Canadian Solar. I was surprised at the size of the farm as you really do not get an accurate view from the roadside. The farm sits on land that covers just over 70 acres and will produce enough electricity for over 1500 homes.

This Atlas Copco Scoop Tram 1520 had the run of the pit after being fully refurbished by the AC team. After the team tested all functions of the scoop it was off to Dumas to be put back into action at the Young Davidson site in Matachewan.

I would like to dedicate this blog post to the Vale East Mine Rescue Team which took top honors at the All Ontario Mine Rescue competition held in Timmins last week. They also were awarded the best first aid award. I had the pleasure of photographing the team in action at the Sudbury District Mine Rescue competition last month.
