Capture the scene: Create an image that showcases the equipment and operator in the underground environment while enhancing the ambient light with minimum discrepancy.
Capture the personality: Create a portrait where the viewers eyes are drawn to the subject while the corresponding environment adds to the overall storytelling of the image.
Those are my main two goals with my mining photography and when executed properly you create images that are timeless for the subjects as well as versatile for the companies marketing & branding.
I get energized when I walk into a site and see images I have created over the years still being used in the companies personal marketing and branding materials.
Stock images usually don’t have the same look or feel that employees are familiar with and so the message of the poster can get lost or skipped without a second look or thought.
Personalized images have that immediate attention grabbing impression that holds the viewers interest so that your message gets noticed, read and reflected which is the main goal of any marketing material.
Note: Always go with the smiling image for the poster. 🙂

Creating images for the MacLean Engineering fleet has taken me all over Ontario and Quebec above ground as well as under. Visiting the Agnico Eagle Mines in Northern Quebec was a great experience as the crew I was with as well as the professionalism of the Agnico employees aloud us to create some stunning images to add to the MacLeans Marketing image arsenal.
I captured this image of Mr. Lopes as I liked the composition this vantage point created overlooking the project that Lopes Ltd (www.lopesltd.com) was spearheading. Felix mentioned to me that it would be a great overhead view of the project and once I captured some installation progress images I took advantage of the scene to create this portrait.
As the remote technology is constantly being modified and streamlined I find myself photographing more and more control rooms with some far away from the equipment that is being operated. Some of these rooms can be tricky to photograph in as the space is usually setup up to maximize the limited space available.
Pictured below is a recent workstation image I created for Epiroc taken at the Hollinger Pit in Timmins Ontario.
Before it was First Cobalt (www.firstcobalt.com) I visited this facility just on the outskirts of Cobalt Ontario back in 2013 to create images for United Commodity. I spent the day touring the refinery and area creating images of all aspects of the process. At the current time the facility was used to extract remaining gold and silver from old tailings from the region. It was quit the process and facility and it’s great to see the resurrection of this unique facility.
You can read more information on the history and current plans of the facility at Northernontariobusiness.com
Recently Largo Resources www.largoresources.com commissioned me to visit their Maracás Menchen Mine located in Bahia State, Brazil to create their Photo Marketing Visuals and now that they have the images Largo has used them across multiple platforms to showcase the companies monthly achievements.
Social media is here to stay and has now become part of our personal and professional lives. It is one of the key components to marketing and branding and having great content is the main ingredient to that recipe.
Visual images attract more attention on social media platforms than text and the more impressive the image is, the more attention that post will get.
But it’s not just social media that need stunning visuals. Your website, brochures, presentations, trade show booths, financial reports, magazine editorials all require corresponding photography. Over the years in the industry I know that photography is something that get’s put on the back burner and doesn’t become a priority until it is needed by an outside source like a Magazine or Presentation and in the mad scramble to get a visual, the company resorts to whatever photos they have on hand. I know this because I read many of the industry magazines and of course I check out the photos used and I still see low resolution, blurry and grainy images being submitted for National and International editorials.
Wouldn’t you like to have an archive of professional images that you can select/send in minutes to be used throughout your companies marketing platforms? It’s one less thing to stress about and one more thing to be proud about!
Having a Professional Photo Archive on hand can save you time and money in the long run but how do you go about getting the images your company requires.

I always enjoyed the challenges of photographing the exploration drill shacks. It could be too sunny throwing harsh shadows across faces or points of interest. It could be a dull hazy day so everything is flat and boring (especially the sky through the ceiling of the shack) or it could be raining which just sucks lol. It’s not a glamorous situation in anyway and you have to be light on your toes as the drillers never stop moving for more than a few seconds but if your not challenged then you are not progressing.
My clients like to get promotional photography created before the mining equipment is shipped and the majority of the time I have to photograph it in the industrial shop or outside in the yard. This isn’t an issue but it does take some time in front of the computer to complete but in the end they have some great images to be showcased in their marketing platforms.
