Above The Ground With The Mining Mechanic
When the equipment breaks they work diligently and fast to get it back up and running. Underground or above sun or rain the pressure is always there to be as quick and efficient as possible.

I love it when I get to photograph equipment immediately after assembly when the paint is fresh, the tires are clean and there isn’t a scratch to be found like this Rock Breaker Scale Boss I photographed before it was shipped to it’s client.
Continuing on my last post in regards to cellphone images used in social media and marketing I thought a related visual would “drive” my point home. The importance of having a professional image archive on hand for your company is a must. Think of how many times images are used in your companies marketing. Social media, websites and trade magazines are all part of your companies image and you never know when your product, company or employees will be featured in one of the media. Your product, facilities and your employees are a representation of the company and should always be showcased at their best, especially when showcasing it to the industry. Look at my attached image. Which one has more “impact”. The cellphone snap or the professionally created image? s
I scour the internet, I search the trade magazines, social media and marketing materials and I always come across the cellsnap images being used for promoting. Now there is nothing wrong with this, heck I do it myself with my Cellsnap series but there is a time and place for those types of images. For everyday social media posts sure, but for your marketing materials? I think not. I also have a personal rule when it comes to social media marketing and using photos. 1 (one) professional image to every 5. If you are posting daily then you should have a High Quality image every week in your social media feed. Drop me a line and let’s talk. I create images right in your shop of your products hassle free.
A few images I created of a Jumbo for Dumas Mining at the Goldcorp Hoyle Pond Mine located in Timmins Ontario. My intention was to use the leading lines of the long boom arms to bring your eyes directly to the operator where as in the last image your gaze goes directly to the rock face.
Shooting the jumbo straight on can be a tricky shot. The lights from the cab need to be exposed properly and when doing so the rest of the image will go almost completely black. In order to light up the 2 booms additional lighting is required but these too must be controlled or the light will spill everywhere and change the “mood” of the image. Additionally lighting up the cab to show the operator also takes some finesse to acquire the correct exposure. This one image may look like a quick shot and it actually is at an exposure faster than a half a second but the setup time takes just a little bit longer.
Every task that needs to be completed can be done efficiently. There is always a way to complete the job that yields the maximum efficiency, in the shortest amount of time, using the least amount of supply and labor. This is what good work is and when it’s accomplished everyone in the company thrives. You can be a “professional” at any job it just takes that individual to realize it.
I was impressed with the speed and accuracy that these tires were removed from the rims at www.a1blastingmats.net . Clearly there was a step by step process in place and each step had to be in the specific order in order to remove the tire safely and quickly. Was it always like that? I think not, but over time, making mistakes and learning from reveals the most efficient process possible.
I was finished my shoot and heading back to the vehicle when I spotted this miner about to cross my path. “Would you like a portrait?” I asked. “Of me?” she replied. “You can try taking a portrait of me but there is a reason why I am behind the camera LOL” I said. That immediately got a smile from her and I knew I had to capture it.
Recently I had the first time opportunity to crawl into and photograph a furnace from the inside. Recently built for Vale Sudbury Operations the rare instance of being inside one of these massive fabrications for the aspect of photographing the individuals and groups that carefully pieced it all together is another piece added to my industry photography puzzle.
“yup, that’s me testing the scene again”
