Watching the movements in the open pit can be very impressive. Witness it during the twilight hours where the ambient light intersects with the illuminated machinery the show becomes a well choregraphed dance performance of heavy equipment.

Light is light. I have said this for years and my mentor said this years before that. It doesn’t matter what type of light we use, it all does the same thing in the end. The “mastery” of it comes from years of practice, playing, manipulating and controlling it. Intensity, direction and form are three qualities of light I “focus” on for every image. How much light to use, what direction do I want it to come from and how soft do I want it look on my subjects all depends on what I have to photography, where I have to photograph it, and how much time do I have to complete it.

Recently photographed the Komatsu WX07 within the underground for Komatsu’s hard rock mining division. Among the few dozen images I created which included the overall unit, components and special features, having the unit moving material is always the perfect stand alone capture.

I photographed this P&H 4100 XPC Shovel at the Marigold Open pit mine in Nevada this past October. With a skilled operator the movement of this machine is poetry.
The image on the latest issue of CIM Magazine (https://magazine.cim.org/en/) features the Rokion R400 (www.rokion.com) Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) manufactured by Prairie Machine (www.prairiemachine.com) that we photographed underground at Vale’s Creighton Mine just outside of Sudbury, Ontario.
This Caterpillar Haul truck was only stationary for a few minutes where I managed to capture this image and then get out of the way.
Roaming Underground In The Rokion I photographed the Rokion R400 www.rokion.com last year deep underground at Vale’s Creighton Mine. Along with the Rokion R100 I manged to create a good variety of images to be showcased on their website and marketing materials.
