Congratulations to Pure Gold Mining Inc (www.puregoldmining.com) on their successful first gold pour. It truly has been a great experience for me to watch and photograph the different stages of the mine development.

Congratulations as well to the staff, contractors, friends and family who have had a part in making Pure Gold a success story in the Mining World and I thank you all for allowing me to document some of the steps along the way.

Pouring The Gold | Mining Photographer Canada

It’s a momentous occasion and one that should be documented for any company, the gold pour. It’s fast, it’s hot and in order to get an ideal image some planning needs to be done in regards to when what where and how.

There is a process to the pour and specific steps need to be completed before we proceed with the capture. When and where is the technician going to be and how do you successfully capture the composition while remaining safe and out of the way during the whole process? How do you frame the image for marketable use and how do you coordinate the ambient lighting as well as the intensive glow during the pour?

We go through “practice pours” and I note what movements the technician takes within the operating space so we can safely capture the image. There is a lot of movement in close quarters so safe positioning of equipment and personnel are though through. It’s fast, and over in a few seconds and if you don’t have all your measures in place before hand you can easily miss the “money shot”.

It’s always warm in the warm room as I call it. Some are open spaces while others are tight for space where every movement to complete the gold pour process is calculated and timed for maximum safety and efficiency. Looking like astronauts before take off the dance of the gold pour has become one of my favorite things to photograph from start to finish.

The term “Visible Gold – VG” is used throughout the mining industry and on most occasions I am photographing the end product in a solid brick form or within core samples from the exploration drillers but recently I photographed some VG that just shined like the yellow brick road.

Last week I had the opportunity of starting the photo archive for my new client Gowest Gold along with the pleasure of having Chief Mine Geologist Rochelle as my tour guide. As usual I always like to create an image of the people on site and especially those who are taking the time to show me around. I hear a lot of the same responses when I ask if they would like their portrait taken and the most popular are “I hope you have a good camera”, “I have never taken a good picture” and my favorite “ugh”. Over the years I have heard them all and I have learned to quickly squash any doubts or nervousness about the portrait. I have my ways, but the key ingredients are professionalism and personality. I always tell them “I will never keep a bad image of you and I guarantee you will like your photo or YOU can hit the delete button on the back of the camera.” In the end, they love their images.

It’s Monday and I am back in the trenches of everyday life. I love Mondays. It’s the start of a brand new week. What happens in the first few hours of waking up on Monday can set the rest of the week in motion. Like the Haul Truck below it get’s dirty and sometimes monotonous but the job needs to get done in order to make progress.
