Some of my first mining shoots where within the exploration field specifically Diamond Drilling and Atlas Copco. It was (and still is) challenging to create unique images in such a small space especially if the rig is still operating.

I always enjoyed the challenges of photographing the exploration drill shacks. It could be too sunny throwing harsh shadows across faces or points of interest. It could be a dull hazy day so everything is flat and boring (especially the sky through the ceiling of the shack) or it could be raining which just sucks lol. It’s not a glamorous situation in anyway and you have to be light on your toes as the drillers never stop moving for more than a few seconds but if your not challenged then you are not progressing.
It was in the high 20’s during the day with sun beating down on us, keeping us warm while the crew worked the diamond drill but as the day turned to evening the temps dropped, your skin cooled and the warm glow of the sunset faded into the crests of the outline mountains.
After touring around the #PDAC2108 tradeshow this past Monday I realized that I have been photographing some of my industrial clients for over 15 years now. My very first glimpse into the Exploration Industry was with Atlas Copco & Brenda Hamilton photographing a line of Hobic ITH Diamond Drilling Bits. Over the years Brenda kept calling me back for new images in different locations and I am still creating images for her and her team at Epiroc today. It’s relationships like this that make my career a choice that I do not regret. Brenda, thanks for being a great client and more importantly a great friend.
It doesn’t matter what the subject is, how basic the object might be or how boring the situation is, a Professional Photographer can and should be able to create the best image possible for their clients. With an extensive background in Portrait photography over the years I have had the opportunity to use many different forms of photography equipment, and when it comes to location lighting I have always had the same opinion…………light is light. I have used expensive monolights with power packs and light modifiers to $20 flash units I bought off of ebay. The quality of the light has always been the same. The only difference I found between the two was the amount of cursing that came out of my mouth when they came crashing to the ground when someone knocked over the light stands.
Looking at the images, it’s hard to tell what type of equipment was used to create it and the truth is, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is the quality of the image and how it will work with your marketing materials.

A Geologist takes notes of the thousands of core samples stacked column after column at this Northern Ontario Mine Site. These Core samples are obtained by drilling into the rock using a core drill tipped with a Diamond Drill Bit. The core samples are then analysed to detect the properties of metals and alloys.
