Having the word “Explosives” in your business name makes me a bit envious. Who wouldn’t want to say “Ya, I work with explosives” or “I blow things up.”? I enjoyed learning the process of what goes into making explosives for the mining industry. I got a true “How It’s Made” day with Nordex Explosives.
James Hodgins visited Kirkland lake just North of Sudbury Ontario to photograph images for Nordex Explosives marketing materials & social media content.
The backside of this cable bolter (CB3) is just as important to photograph as the front side.

Regular inspections and maintenance are performed by Kal Tire specialists in the underground maintenance bay of the mine. I captured numerous images during this shoot for Kal Tire showcasing the different procedures to ensure the safety of their product. These images will be used for their marketing materials, website and publications.

Deep underground in Northern Quebec this MacLean Scissor Bolter works around the clock with precise precision.

While I was underground on Friday creating images for my client Dan here was my “escort” around the underground labyrinth. Here he was taking me all over the underworld watching me create images of other people that I figured he should have one of himself as well. As he was looking back in the truck, waiting for a scoop to pass, the whole “scenario” just clicked with me. The angle, the lighting, even the subject matter all fit together for a great story telling image. I knew that this was going to be the image I would create for him at the end of the day…………………and we did.

I don’t know how many self portraits I have of myself over my 20 years in photography but it’s a lot. It’s not that I like taking pictures of myself (oh I do) but when working with limited time it’s always best to have everything setup before the client set’s foot in front of the camera. So I use myself as the “test subject”. Some I like, some I don’t. Fortunately you will only see the ones I like. Have a great Monday.

Either before the shoot starts or when it finishes I always like to create a nice Portrait of my subjects while in the shop. It’s a way for me to say “Thank You” for being a part of the shoot. I hope he likes it.

While I was underground photographing for Maclean Engineering I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to photograph Roger Dunning who has been in the industry for over 20+ years. For anyone who has been underground, you know how it feels when you are over 9000 ft underground…… Humid, hot, sweaty.

I captured this image last week while underground in Quebec and at the time I had several ideas on how I would title this. As I was getting ready to post it just now I really couldn’t add any text to it. Adding text just might decrease the impact that this image has. There are SO many stories behind this image but it is up to you to decide which one relates to you. So at this time I am leaving it unnamed. Enjoy.
