Just because it’s -32 degrees Celsius outside doesn’t mean we get a day off from doing our jobs. The core samples don’t stack themselves nor do they care what temperature it is. Photographing on site in the cold Winter months does have it’s challenges. Equipment freezes up, batteries drain faster, and fingers go numb. In the Summer months when I am underground at +32 degrees I wish I was topside and in the Winter months on days like today I wish I was underground enjoying the warm humid stale air. In the end though it’s all about getting the job done and being prepared for what the environment has in store that day. We look at the bright side here in Northern Ontario, the 4 seasons always have beauty for us to see, even if our eyeballs are frozen in their sockets.
I just got back from a little road trip just outside of Haileybury Ontario where I had the chance to have an on site consultation with my new client CXS LTD (Canadian Exploration Services LTD). On site photography consultations give me the chance to look over the operations, talk to the key people in regards to the photography requirements, start a rapport with the companies owners and CEO’s, and discuss upcoming photoshoot opportunities. It also gives the chance for my client to understand the dynamics of the photography and how we work together to create the images they require.
For CXS we will be creating images of their exploration and construction services for their new website, social media, brochures and other marketing materials to showcase their services, fleet and work quality. I am also looking forward to photographing some heavy equipment in the construction industry like the CASE excavator below that I grabbed a quick photo of while I was there.
Last week I had the opportunity of starting the photo archive for my new client Gowest Gold along with the pleasure of having Chief Mine Geologist Rochelle as my tour guide. As usual I always like to create an image of the people on site and especially those who are taking the time to show me around. I hear a lot of the same responses when I ask if they would like their portrait taken and the most popular are “I hope you have a good camera”, “I have never taken a good picture” and my favorite “ugh”. Over the years I have heard them all and I have learned to quickly squash any doubts or nervousness about the portrait. I have my ways, but the key ingredients are professionalism and personality. I always tell them “I will never keep a bad image of you and I guarantee you will like your photo or YOU can hit the delete button on the back of the camera.” In the end, they love their images.

Sometimes you need to capture a scenario where you just can’t be behind the camera due to location, confined space, safety or sometimes all of the above. In these instances I simply use my remote triggers to trip the shutter while I stand back out of harms way while waiting for the process to end so I can see what my efforts have captured. It’s similar to the film days when you didn’t know what you really had until you were sitting in your car pawing through the freshly developed prints from the lab.

A Geologist takes notes of the thousands of core samples stacked column after column at this Northern Ontario Mine Site. These Core samples are obtained by drilling into the rock using a core drill tipped with a Diamond Drill Bit. The core samples are then analysed to detect the properties of metals and alloys.

I have been creating images for Atlas Copco (Mining & Exploration Ontario Divisions) for several years now from hard to reach Northern Ontario locations to the hills of Mexico, above ground to 1000’s of feet underground. Most of the time the images are used for product brochures, magazine articles and internal investor presentations. That being said, it’s still nice to see your images used on their new international website which was launched earlier this week. Thousands of Copco images are created each year (including my own) and some of them are put into their online media archive to be used by all Atlas Copco Divisions.

The used Reaming Shell is replaced with a new one just outside the Core Shack. Minutes after this photo was taken the Reaming Shell was sent deep into the Earth’s Core.
