I feel it’s a momentous occasion when the gold bar finally get’s the official punch stamp. One letter at a time each hit with the hammer brings the process closer to completion.
Open pit morning. The sun was starting to break through the morning clouds as the wind pushed them across the site. After a few minutes of watching the trucks come and go the sun broke through again just in time for me to capture it.

These 2 images were taken minutes apart while on site in Mexico.
I try to create images that are not “staged” but in my professional experience there has to be some amount of planning for a creative image to be successful. When I “stage” a scenario I am not placing the person in a position they normally would not be in during the process of their job but simply freezing the action/motion that they have placed themselves in during the process of their task…..did you follow that? LOL. In other words, I have them go through the steps of their job and I will see a moment in their process that I think is a good capture……and that is what I then proceed to do at the best of my ability with the elements presented to me at the time.
Throughout the day I will try to capture as many different elements of the site surroundings that I can and while some images take mere seconds to capture others are more complex.

Some of my first mining shoots where within the exploration field specifically Diamond Drilling and Atlas Copco. It was (and still is) challenging to create unique images in such a small space especially if the rig is still operating.

Sometimes I use strobes, sometimes I use Led’s, sometimes I use flashlights, headlights and cap lamps. I get asked “what lighting equipment do you use?” and my answer is “Everything.” I seldom know how I am going to execute a capture until I know a few things. What do I have to work with, what’s the environment like, how much time do I have and how is the image going to be used by my client. I could use 1 light or even 10 lights for a capture, it could be a 1/200th of a second exposure or a 2 minute exposure. Asking me how many lights I use is the same as asking “how many images do I get?” (I used to get that a lot) and my secondary answer is “as many as it takes to get the job done.”
My One Click Wonders.
Sometimes “I get lucky” (I use this term loosely)
A few months ago I created a few images of Melynda (Welder at Vale’s Creighton Mine) for a Canada Skills Publication. As she was moving into position I clicked the shutter button for my test shot to make sure everything was firing and this was the end result of the capture.
It’s dark and I adjusted my lighting for the task at hand but with low contrast and muted colors it has impact. It was my favorite image from the series and if I settled on it I would have been done the session in 1/13th of second lol.

Every time I look at this series of images I created for Essroc Italcementi Group (now Lehigh Hanson) I think of the Jawa SandCrawlers from Star Wars.
I get asked the question “What do mining companies need images for?” a lot and my answer is “anything & everything”.
