A throwback to some energy/hydro images I created for a client. IF you don’t have power, you wont have production.
The leading lines created by the boom brings your eyes directly to the heart of the image as well as the heart of the equipment…………the operator. I think this is why I find the jumbo so appealing to photograph. The ambient light from the deck throws just enough illumination to light the booms without overpowering the surrounding environment where you might lose the line of sight due to the business of the whole scene.
Of course this is purely a photographers point of view but there is an essence of “art” within specific images created in the underground world.
While I am on site creating images that my clients require for their proposals, financial reports, websites or whatever the media is, I will also keep my eyes pealed for those “instagram” type scenarios. These images are not the bread and butter images used to showcase the full potential of the company but instead are used as “fillers” throughout their social media spectrum. To me, the proper photography term for these photos is “snapshot”. They are created on the fly where all you do is lift the camera and capture the moment you see it because after a few seconds the scenario is gone. These scenes are things we photographers see day in and day out and there are hundreds of them happening every day on the site that most people would not even consider a second look or thought. So the next time I am on site for your company, ask me to grab a few dozen of these “snapshots” for you to use in the upcoming months. No they do not have the same impact as my regular concept photography but they do serve a purpose with your companies social media branding.
I just got back from a little road trip just outside of Haileybury Ontario where I had the chance to have an on site consultation with my new client CXS LTD (Canadian Exploration Services LTD). On site photography consultations give me the chance to look over the operations, talk to the key people in regards to the photography requirements, start a rapport with the companies owners and CEO’s, and discuss upcoming photoshoot opportunities. It also gives the chance for my client to understand the dynamics of the photography and how we work together to create the images they require.
For CXS we will be creating images of their exploration and construction services for their new website, social media, brochures and other marketing materials to showcase their services, fleet and work quality. I am also looking forward to photographing some heavy equipment in the construction industry like the CASE excavator below that I grabbed a quick photo of while I was there.
Last week I was on location for a half day shoot in Sturgeon Falls Ontario photographing the process and crew of www.a1blastingmats.net . Old tires of any size are sorted, cut and utilized to create those large black blasting mats you see lying around most construction areas that require these mats for blasting rock. I was extremely impressed with the organization, physical requirements and the process from start to finish to create each custom blasting mat. These 2 images are the beginning stages to creating these mats. Tires from all over the area are collected and delivered to the A1 Factory. Next stage is “cutting” the tire into a more usable material.

Instead of Throw Back Thursdays on Social Media for me it’s been a Throw Back Month. I don’t think I have had to dig through my archives this much in years but since most of my clients are now ramping up their social media content I have been taken down a memory lane of my images these past few weeks. The image below I captured in 2014 while on my way to the bottom of the pit where I was to begin my shoot. The haul trucks were coming up one after another and as the fog was lifting I thought it was a great opportunity to capture a few as they were making their way around the bend.

I always like to see my clients use the images I create for them. Why wouldn’t’ they? There is a reason why companies hire professional photographers to create images for their marketing materials, websites and trade shows. Like BTI www.rockbreaker.com where I photographed their Scaleboss 3d scaler at the Norcat Underground Training Facility here in Sudbury, Ontario. When your company has a new product, procedure, personnel or heavy machinery (possibly even “ground breaking” no pun intended” You need to get it into the public’s eye and in order to do that you need imagery that is visually pleasing, has that eye catching element that gives your marketing materials “IMPACT”.
The majority of my clients are surprised how versatile my images can be used across a variety of platforms throughout their marketing campaign. In the end the cost for high quality professional mining industrial photography pays for itself within a single image used. Don’t believe me? Just ask any of my clients.
If you have been following my posts for a few years now you know one of my favorite things to photograph is the Jumbo Drill, especially when it’s a make/model that I have not yet photographed like this Terex CS-8328 I came across while on location a few weeks ago. I think it’s because there are so many different combinations of scenarios you can setup with the Jumbo and watching the articulating arms dance around the face with a skilled operator at the controls can be impressive. Even though most Jumbos are equipped with numerous LED lights I always like to highlight a few key areas in the scene to draw your attention to other elements of the photo that tell a story. A quality image should be used to showcase a procedure, company, equipment, personnel or message all at the same time depending on the final marketing output and presentation the client chooses.

I was finished my shoot and heading back to the vehicle when I spotted this miner about to cross my path. “Would you like a portrait?” I asked. “Of me?” she replied. “You can try taking a portrait of me but there is a reason why I am behind the camera LOL” I said. That immediately got a smile from her and I knew I had to capture it.
After creating some portrait and machine work underground last week I headed up to the mouth of the portal to finish off the session with a few more scoop images. While Ron (the scoop operator) was waiting for me to direct the next image I looked over to see him standing/leaning against his scoop where I quickly asked him to simply move a bit more forward so I could get a better composition with the scene. It’s a very simple image I will admit, but it works on a few different levels which makes it one of my favorites to date.
