Let The Sparks Fly | The Industry Photographer
I have photographed many welders over the years and although the images tend to be similar in fashion I still enjoy the look of the process. Sometimes its tricky to obtain an overall exposure of the entire image due to the arc flash and if you expose for this specific light source the rest of the image will be extremely dark. The flash does throw some great light and dynamic shadows and it is easily enhanced with a little extra lighting illuminating the rest of the subject and shop environment like I did with this image I recently photographed for Provincial Doors in Sudbury www.provincialdoors.com

It Took Me Less Than A Second To Capture This
Shooting the jumbo straight on can be a tricky shot. The lights from the cab need to be exposed properly and when doing so the rest of the image will go almost completely black. In order to light up the 2 booms additional lighting is required but these too must be controlled or the light will spill everywhere and change the “mood” of the image. Additionally lighting up the cab to show the operator also takes some finesse to acquire the correct exposure. This one image may look like a quick shot and it actually is at an exposure faster than a half a second but the setup time takes just a little bit longer.

It’s almost that time of year again when I start getting calls and emails regarding outdoor shoots in October/November that should have actually taken place during the Summer months when the environment was green and warm. Start thinking ahead now to decide which outdoor environmental images you will require during the Fall and Winter months. It’s much easier to make it look like Summer when it actually IS Summer and digitally removing backgrounds and installing Summer scenes is very time consuming and costly.

Last week I found myself once again in the industrial shops at Cambrian College www.cambriancollege.ca . I have been photographing the different departments, staff and facilities at Cambrian for years and the images I create are used throughout the college, website and career book. My photography career started at Cambrian College over 25 years ago when I found myself taking a photography darkroom course to add a few credits to my year. Little did I know that it would eventually lead me to a lifelong career behind the camera.

Mexico Mining Sunset | International Mining Photographer
It was in the high 20’s during the day with sun beating down on us, keeping us warm while the crew worked the diamond drill but as the day turned to evening the temps dropped, your skin cooled and the warm glow of the sunset faded into the crests of the outline mountains.

It was an amazing assignment where I made some great friends, experienced high quality professionalism from the crew, devastating humidity (from my clothes point of view) , spectacular food and exceptional people.

The Brightest Things Underground Are The People | International Mining Photographer
Where the underground world is a dark place with next to no lighting your cap lamps bring some minor brightness to the people that work and interact with each other in this environment. The Hellas Gold people I met in Greece were amazing and even though with a few we had the language barrier it was easy to connect with them as they take pride in their jobs, the company and the people they work with. Its a challenge to capture images with such minimal light but when you do you get a true feeling of the darkness that is always present in the underground.

Olympias Concentrate At Night | Mining Industrial Photographer
The Olympias concentrate plant lights up the area with an array of painted colors. Sites like this take on a very different look when the sun sets and the lighting illuminates the buildings and area.
