The other side of the mining/industrial sectors I like to photograph is the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and Land Reclamation Projects. This is a side that most people do not think exists but I have photographed these projects for all of my major clients.

While on location I try to photograph all aspects of the operations including people, facilities, processes and products. These images are then used for the clients Annual Reports, Website, Investor Fact Sheets, Blog Posts, Trade show Materials and Presentations.
As my friend and I were on our way to an early morning hunt today we had to stop and back up so I could capture this sunrise photo of Totten Mine with my cellphone (yes, I don’t bring my camera when I hunt).

If you are going to take the time to take a picture why not spend a few extra minutes and create a portrait? Portrait lighting doesn’t have to be complicated. You can even create stunning images with just one light. Once you have the basic fundamentals of portrait lighting, stunning portraits can take no more than 3 minutes to create (Not including equipment setup). I created the below portrait of Mike as a Thank You for helping me out during my shoot yesterday and I also showed him the difference between good lighting and “snapshot” lighting. Can you get a nice image with on camera lighting? Sure you can, but why settle for nice? Create something unique, hone your skills and give your clients something they will enjoy to look at and share with others.

I had the opportunity to photograph another Jumbo last month. Always reminds me of something out of the movie Aliens. I hope in the future I can photograph these badboys on surface to see just how creative we can get.

A few weeks ago Vale had “Take Your Kids To Work Day” so I followed them around for a few hours capturing images of their experience. I thought wedding receptions were fast paced (when I used to photograph them) but shooting on the fly underground can be tricky as the lighting is constantly changing. All in all I thought the kids had a great experience learning the process of underground mining and smelting. First impressions are huge as these kids will be our future in this industry.
It was hard to pick a few images out of hundreds for this post.
Sometimes when we are in the coreshack I get lucky with the direction of the sunlight. We had the top covers open for this shot to show the blue sky and clouds outside and also the backdoors open to bring in a bit of light for a “backlight” to fill in the shadows on the right side. Using the big white overhead door as a light panel the sun bounced off it onto my subject.
