This Caterpillar tractor scraper is getting ready to make another pass. Several of these machines can work together in a push-pull format for maximum earth moving performance.

When your underground working side by side with someone they tend to become more than your co-worker. They become your close friend, your “brother” or “sister”. You count on them day in and day out. You look out for each other and you keep each other safe.

Just as I would in studio, when I create portraits on the job site I pay careful attention to the main fundamentals of good photography. Lighting, composition & exposure. However there is more to it than this, lens selection, aperture choice, background environment and white balance are key factors as well even when creating a portrait using simple ambient light.

If you red my last post in regards to Jumbo Love, here is the operator that stands at the helm.

Of all things I love photographing on the mine site the Jumbo drill takes the cake (until I get to photograph a bucket wheel excavator). For this image below I used a little back lighting to draw more attention to the operator than to the boom arms. This photo was created for Dumas at the Young Davidson Mine in Matachewan.
“James was an absolute pleasure to work with, he is affordable and very accommodating. The photography he produced was exactly what we were looking for, it was high quality and we received our pictures with a short turnaround time. We will definitely hire James again.”

Sometimes I get hired by companies to create portraits of their employees doing their jobs. Most workers have never had a picture of them at work, or if they have, it’s a low quality snapshot taken by another employee. I have photographed employees that have been on the job for over 25 years and have never had their portrait created. When I explain to them that this will be different, professional, one that they can take home and show their spouse and kids and say this is what I DO, they get it. When I give them a quick “glance” at the back of my camera they quickly realize that this is special. It means something to them, and it means something that their company wanted this for them. These workers are proud of what they do.
Here is one portrait I created while on location for Ledcor. It was a pleasure to photograph their team as they were professional and courteous.

I seem to make it a habit to grab a few shots of haul trucks while in the passenger seat while driving around the mine site. I find it gives you a very realistic view of the truck in action.
