The Rocket Boomer In Red Lake
While I was underground in Red Lake last month with www.puregoldmining.ca I photographed this Atlas Copco Rocket Boomer Jumbo as it was making its way to the face.

Just few samples of Industry Magazines where my clients were showcased using the images I created for their company. Having high impact photography on hand for your marketing branding is essential in today’s social and print media.
Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Manitouwadge Ontario to create images for Manroc Developments. We covered their undreground operations including their Alimak Raise Climber at Barrick Gold’s Williams Mine as well as some fabrication processes at their multiple industrial shops in the town of Manitouwadge. The Alimak is an interesting piece of equipment (from Manroc’s Site) The Alimak method raises between levels in a safe and effective manner. Drilling, loading and blasting are all performed from the platform of the Raise Climber, which is adapted to fit the precise dimensions and shape of the raise. Furthermore, the Alimak Raise Climber implements a rack and pinion rail, designed to carry air and water for increased ventilation.
I always enjoy photographing the Alimak and this time was no different. It can be a challenge in some locations especially if it’s over an open area but this time I got to get up close and personal at ground level.
Here is a different image from past shoot of the Alimak

Sometimes, the tripod just doesn’t go high enough, and if it did my height still is a factor. Fortunately when you surround yourself with friends, help is always close at hand. I still create images for some of my commercial clients over the years. I have created images for www.cambriancollege.ca viewbook for over a decade now and each year the Cambrian creative team come up with new scenarios that I try to capture. With this paramedic scene I just couldn’t get back far enough without bringing in more support and time was becoming a factor for this shoot. Luckily my buddy Franco stepped up and lent a helping hand (or two)
I had the opportunity to photograph some new Rock Bolt technology from the National Research Council of Canada. Pictured here is the monitoring station used to collect the data from the advanced rock bolts. The rock bolts are equipped with senors that can detect the slightest movement of the rock they are placed in. What does this mean? It means safety. Being able to detect seismic activity at an early stage can increase the response time to addressing the issue. At Vale’s central tailings facility here in Sudbury straw is used for dust & odor control. Along with the use of biosolids the transformation of this once barren landscape has now been transformed into fields of swaying stalks of hay with areas of green vegetable growing vegetation.

Sometimes while I am setting up my equipment for my next shot my subjects will continue working by discussing tasks at hand. When this happens, I will quickly adjust my equipment to accommodate the scenario and click away. Most of the time they don’t even know I am a capturing the scene.
There is just something about this image. As I type this I still cant figure out why this image intrigues me. I have captured 1000’s of images underground over the years but as I was setting up my gear today at Pure Gold’s Madsen site I turned around and there it was. I had to capture it. It’s simple. Two miners having a conversation while they wait for the photographer. I told them to ignore me for a few minutes and I quickly added a little illumination so that my camera could record the scene as the conversation continued. To the photographer, this is gold.
