Did you know I love photographing Industrial Shops? It was actually I photoshoot I did in the early 2000’s at a welding shop that sparked my interest for Industrial Photography. My first industrial website was named “Mud Sweat & Gears” that covered a variety of industrial trades throughout the country. Just like the mining industry I have seen a huge growth in the quality of imagery and marketing used to promote some of the largest industrial companies.

Grinding It Out With Epiroc And Bristol

Yesterday I spent the day at one of the Bristol Machine Shops in Sudbury with Epiroc photographing the different stages of the refurbishing process that Bristol meticulously provides. Days. I could spend days in this shop photographing the people, products and machines being used simultaneously throughout the day. Epiroc products displayed before and after the refurb process catch my eye over and over as we had our walkabout before I started my session. I have said this before and I will say it again, there is “art” everywhere in machine shops if you look for it and I will display some in my upcoming posts when I get the go ahead form my client.

Let The Sparks Fly | The Industry Photographer

I have photographed many welders over the years and although the images tend to be similar in fashion I still enjoy the look of the process. Sometimes its tricky to obtain an overall exposure of the entire image due to the arc flash and if you expose for this specific light source the rest of the image will be extremely dark. The flash does throw some great light and dynamic shadows and it is easily enhanced with a little extra lighting illuminating the rest of the subject and shop environment like I did with this image I recently photographed for Provincial Doors in Sudbury www.provincialdoors.com

I Wont BS You Just To Hire Me | Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

It doesn’t matter what product or process your company is manufacturing I can create unique images that convey to your clients the standards and professionalism your company is known for. Again and again I flip through industry blogs, ezines & magazines and the photographer in me screams a thousand deaths as I see sub par cellphone snapshots used to promote their companies. It reminds me of brides that spend hundreds of dollars on their wedding shoes but cheap out on the photographer that will capture their hopefully once in a lifetime special day hahaha.

If you are unsure about using a professional photographer, or you are not sure if you need an updated photo library for your company just ask a professional. I will tell you the truth. If I think your images are high quality that get the job done then I won’t BS you just to hire me. I will however give you an honest critique and a timeline on when you should update. You just have to ask.

Lighting Up The Shot | Sudbury Commercial Photography

I always like to capture the “lighting of the torch” scenario when I am on location shooting welding/cutting. All my lighting is setup and ready to go through the required shot list for my client but before we start I have them do one more “test shot”. The subject still thinks that we are getting set up for the shoot but really I just want this type of shot as natural as the subject can orchestrate it without any direction from me or the shoot coordinator.
