I got asked recently how I manage to create crisp clear mining images in which I replied “I have a good camera.” lol.
The truth is, I am still learning, even after 25+ years of lighting and photographing people. My goal is to illuminate the scene so that it can be captured by the camera sensor without it looking like there is additional lighting but 95% of the time there is additional lighting.
I remember my mentor teaching me about the different elements of lighting, and once it clicked, I viewed everything I saw with different eyes consciously pointing out highlights, shadows, mid-tones and so forth. Studying the works of iconic portrait photographers learning the different lighting patterns and how to create shadows and highlights
Lighting alone has many elements to be considered. The intensity of the light, the quality (soft/hard), the direction of the light, the coverage of space and much more. When we throw in a distinctive subject or subjects, lighting is used to isolate the subject, separate the subject from the background and highlight a specific area within the image…..all without you even knowing it.
