Painting With Light

Finding the right balance is key. Sometimes it’s about accentuating the soft glow of the cap lamp while other times it’s about strategically placing my lights to mimic the existing illumination. It’s a delicate dance between enhancing and preserving the atmosphere. It’s about crafting a visual narrative that draws the viewer into the moment, making them feel like they’re right there with us.

As We Wait.

Another one of my favorite underground images to capture . Sitting in the vehicle. There is always opportunity to capture/create this image as it presents itself multiple times throughout a shift. Sometimes I get lucky with the lighting, sometimes I create my own luck lol.

The Core Shack

Images from the core shack have been seen and used in publications for years throughout every media form available. People looking at core samples, logging core samples, closeups of core samples as well as visible gold are key images from the shack. I LOVE photographing these types of images. I know I know I say I love everything I shoot and I do, but with the core shack comes an added challenge because these types of images have been seen and used everywhere, so the challenge for me is “how do you make these types of images better?” For me it’s quality of sharpness and readability. Visible gold should be visible and stand out using shadow placement. Geologists should not blend in with the background and closeups of visible gold should be crisp and clutter free.

It does take a little bit more time and effort to capture these images but in the end the effort and time is worth it. These were a few images we created at Alamos gold Mulatos & Island Gold Sites

The term “Visible Gold – VG” is used throughout the mining industry and on most occasions I am photographing the end product in a solid brick form or within core samples from the exploration drillers but recently I photographed some VG that just shined like the yellow brick road.

2 Brains Are Better Than Mine.

In his book “Think and Grow Rich“, Hill described the Mastermind principle as, “The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony…no two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind”, also known as, the Mastermind.

I find surrounding yourself with goal oriented, like minded individuals a powerful tool. I have been lucky enough over the years to draw upon (and still do) the knowledge of my mentor Robert Provencher and over the past few years my good friend Victor CEO of www.Pendaproductions.com

I have had the privileged to work with Victor on sites in Canada, the US and Greece and with the completion of each project I gain more knowledge and understanding within my business. To be able to call someone with questions in relation to your business and know that you will get honesty and insight from a different view and perspective is an invaluable resource.

Within any business or industry look for those individuals that exceed the norm, work hard and are willing to pass on their knowledge because in the end you will both be closer to achieving your goals no matter what they are.

Playing With Penda

Well that’s a wrap here in Nevada with www.pendaproductions.com where I covered some open pit photography as well as Aerial Drone photography by Penda CEO Victor (Certified Canadian and US Drone Operator). It’s great working with the Penda team and the products they produce are outstanding especially their mining client videos and graphics. A big thanks to my friend Chris Greef for assisting me on this trip as well as the last. It was very much appreciated.

Note: Victor and I went to Kindergarten as well as the beginning of high school together and actually lived on the same street, it wasn’t until a few years ago we reconnected via the mining industry. Small world.

Dreaming Of Greece

The Brightest Things Underground Are The People | International Mining Photographer

Where the underground world is a dark place with next to no lighting your cap lamps bring  some minor brightness to the people that work and interact with each other in this environment.  The Hellas Gold people I met in Greece were amazing and even though with a few we had the language barrier it was easy to connect with them as they take pride in their jobs, the company and the people they work with.  Its a challenge to capture images with such minimal light but when you do you get a true feeling of the darkness that is always present in the underground.
