Underground Miner | Mining Photog
I love everything about this photo. The lighting, the shallow depth of field, the sharpness, his expression and the background.

In a previous post I mentioned I photographed images for Vale’s new Home Safe Program. Below is the video that was created by www.overtheatlantic.com if you have not already seen it. While we were filming I was creating stills on the fly for the marketing materials that are placed throughout the minesites. I have attached a few below. PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO!!! Everyone who is in the industry should watch this video so they are reminded on why they should work safe.
I take this VERY seriously as I am also on site and underground as well.

I captured this image last week while underground in Quebec and at the time I had several ideas on how I would title this. As I was getting ready to post it just now I really couldn’t add any text to it. Adding text just might decrease the impact that this image has. There are SO many stories behind this image but it is up to you to decide which one relates to you. So at this time I am leaving it unnamed. Enjoy.

I do enjoy photographing underground any chance I can get but I am looking forward to working with a few new clients this Summer in some unique locations. Each location brings it’s own challenges whether it’s lighting, accessibility, or even the subject I am shooting, but that is all part of the job. As a professional it’s not about “rolling with the punches” but rather “been there done that” which only comes with experience.

I still remember how amazed I was at just how small things can look in the distance. It wasn’t until I was standing beside this beast (and within it) just how big it actually was. Of course, I know that this Dragline is small in comparison to other mining machines around the world, but it’s still a beast in my books.

Just outside the mill Metso workers are prepping the next stage of the mill liner replacement.
It’s Monday morning and even though the sun was out all weekend I still daydream of warmer weather. When I captured this image in Puerto Escondido Cuba it was a cool 32 degrees and about 80% humidity. I was thankful for auto focus because the sweat kept dripping into my eyes blurring my vision.
While on location in Cuba James Hodgins a Sudbury Photographer created images for an international Oil & Gas company to be used for their Annual Reports and Investor Relations materials
Yesterday I was on location with Donald Bertrand of HALO CANADA to photograph the installation of Halo Led Lights (#halocanada) in the Norcat Facility here in Sudbury Ontario. The LED lighting increases illumination which makes the working area more safe, reduces energy costs, increases worker moral and is easy to install. I was very impressed with how much this product illuminated the area we were working in as you can see by the photos below. For more information on this product please email my friend Donald Bertrand – OCP Canadian distributor for Halo Lighting Solution don@ocp.ca

Last month I had the opportunity to visit Vale’s Port Colborne Nickel Refinery. Unfortunately I didn’t get to spend a lot of time photographing all the processes but I am looking forward to photographing the remainder sometime this year.
