…….and I easily could. I could point the camera, press the shutter button and capture the image but honestly, anyone can do that.
Show me what you will be doing, where you will be standing, what you will be looking it and how and where you will be moving if you do. When I create images my subjects are doing what they would naturally be doing during their job. My goal is to freeze that moment in a capture but in order to do that, where and what they are doing is not always optimal for a photographic capture.
Lighting plays a pivotal role when creating storytelling photography whether it’s incorporating the light that is already available, injecting an external light source to the environment or combining both. I use light in a very specific way to create my images. I want my subjects to be well lit with highlights and shadows so you can see the curvatures of their faces. I want my subjects to be separated from the background so they are in the key focus area, and I want the image as a whole to be properly exposed. Then I look at how I want to compose the image and where I want the subjects to be “framed” . Once I have all this accomplished, I just let them do their thing and at that point, I press the shutter button.
