If you are at the American Exploration And Mining Association Convention #aema17 at the moment, please take the time visit my friend Don at Booth 750. Xglo led striplighting in my opinion is a great product for any mine especially in high traffic areas. I have photographed the before/after and installation of these lights and the results are “night and day”. When there is high visibility at the workplace safety issues decline but don’t take my word for it, visit Don and see for yourself. Tell him I said hi.
When I photographed the Sherp a few months ago I had been tinkering with the idea of photomotion and incorporating it into my images. During this photoshoot, I intentionally wanted to place the Sherp in water so that I could show some motion in this image later on. Well I finally had some free time to play around with it and I think this is one of those features that you will see more from me as time goes on. Stay tuned for more motion images from @miningphotog
Every now and then I get requested to photograph images of sustainability, land reclamation and corporate social responsibility for my clients. I do enjoy these shoots as I get to talk to the land owners and locals about the changes that have been made over the years. Here are a few images I created for one of my clients while I was visiting Cuba for a tour of the community gardens where a large variety of vegetables were being tended to by local farmers.
Awhile back I wrote about my shoot with Schauenburg (via www.signaturegroupofcompanies.com) creating images for their products, branding and marketing materials. Ever since that shoot I find myself looking up more often than not while I am underground. Vent tubing is one thing I really didn’t notice before hand, but now I notice all the different styles, materials and locations of each system at the various mines I am working in.
Inspecting the installation before closing the gap.

Last week I had a great discussion with Trevor Hall of Clear Creek Digital about the mining industry, and how companies big and small are harnessing the power of social media to get their name/brand out in the open for everyone to see. In case you missed it check out this link POWERFUL IMAGES FROM THE MINING INDUSTRY and have a listen to the audio download of our conversation.
For the past few years I have photographed many Joy Global’s Mining Fleet and production here in Northern Ontario. This past April Joy Global was acquired by Komatsu (read more here) which is another company in which I admire the quality of their products and look forward to hopefully photographing some of their surface equipment as well as the underground. Along with the quality, the people I have met at Joy have all been a pleasure to work with and photograph.
A rough Canadian Diamond is scanned and marked for cutting by a precision Diamond Planning Laser System. Once the diamond is mapped out it will then be cut to the mapping specifications and then ground down and polished to yield the highest quality for that diamond.
40 Under Forty
A few months ago I had photographed Theresa Nyabeze and Gilbert Lamarche for Vale and their #40underforty achievement.
I have photographed these 2 individuals in the past and it was a pleasure to do so again for an accomplishment such as this.
The 40 Under Forty Awards bring recognition to those that bring positive changes to their industry and to the community.
Congratulations again Theresa & Gilbert, well deserved.

The Shotcrete Sprayer is another interesting piece of machinery to photograph. Like a boom arm of the jumbo the sprayer arm can articulate in a wide range of motion to cover the maximum amount of space in which it is working in. This Maclean Shotcrete Sprayer was just in transition to moving to another area of the mine so I didn’t capture it in action during this project but I am sure I will come across an opportunity to see it in action above or below the surface.

While I was on my latest project I had the chance to scratch off a few things from my photo bucket list. Yes I have one of those and I am constantly adding stuff to it as the years go on. Recently I had the chance to watch a controlled blast at the Copper Mountain Mine just outside of Princeton British Columbia. We had a great vantage point high up on the opposite side of the pit where we had a birds eye view of the whole event. I have photographed many things in the explosive industry but this was the first time I was able to witness the finished explosion. I hope in the future I can get the opportunity to create some unique visuals using the blast as a sub focal point. Yes, the brain was ticking immediately after this event.
