Adding Motion to my Mining Industrial Images : Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

When I photographed the Sherp a few months ago I had been tinkering with the idea of photomotion and incorporating it into my images. During this photoshoot, I intentionally wanted to place the Sherp in water so that I could show some motion in this image later on. Well I finally had some free time to play around with it and  I think this is one of those features that you will see more from me as time goes on. Stay tuned for more motion images from @miningphotog

Every now and then  I get requested to photograph images of sustainability, land reclamation and corporate social responsibility for my clients.  I do enjoy these shoots as I get to talk to the land owners and locals about the changes that have been made over the years.    Here are a few images I created for one of my clients while I was visiting Cuba for a tour of the community gardens where a large variety of vegetables were being tended to by local farmers.

Bringing Air To Where It Is Needed The Most | Underground Photographer James Hodgins

Awhile back I wrote about my shoot with Schauenburg  (via creating images for their products, branding and marketing materials.  Ever since that shoot I find myself looking up more often than not while I am underground.  Vent tubing is one thing I really didn’t notice before hand, but now I notice all the different styles, materials and locations of each system at the various mines I am working in.

Let’s Talk About Mining, Images, Social Media And Marketing | Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

Last week I had a great discussion with Trevor Hall of Clear Creek Digital about the mining industry,  and how companies big and small are harnessing the power of social media to get their name/brand out in the open for everyone to see.    In case you missed it check out this link  POWERFUL IMAGES FROM THE MINING INDUSTRY and have a listen to the audio download of our conversation.

As with everything in the camera industry, mobile/robotic inspection camera’s are becoming more popular in those hard to reach areas of the world.  Confined spaces and toxic environments can now be inspected without any risk to the human operator.  As the technology advances, automation, battery power and the data network will soon do away with power chords and tethering for these camera robots.

The Joy Of Komatsu | Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

For the past few years I have photographed many Joy Global’s Mining Fleet  and production here in Northern Ontario.  This past April Joy Global was acquired by Komatsu (read more here) which is another company in which I admire the quality of their products and look forward to hopefully photographing some of their surface equipment as well as the underground.  Along with the quality, the people I have met at Joy have all been a pleasure to work with and photograph.

As the sun was high over the rim emphasizing the shadows of the clouds  I thought it was the perfect opportunity to create a portrait of our lead rep on the project.  It was the least I could do since he was at our sides the whole time, organizing location, people and procedures for us while we were on and off site.  All the ingredients were there for something visual in what most might deem a very mundane environment but to me I see “impact” all around me.  I stole a few minutes to find the right angle for a background that wasn’t too distracting but added to the story of the main subject even though I knew the green of Brads jacket will always bring the viewers attention back to him.
