It doesn’t matter what the subject is, how basic the object might be or how boring the situation is, a Professional Photographer can and should be able to create the best image possible for their clients. With an extensive background in Portrait photography over the years I have had the opportunity to use many different forms of photography equipment, and when it comes to location lighting I have always had the same opinion…………light is light. I have used expensive monolights with power packs and light modifiers to $20 flash units I bought off of ebay. The quality of the light has always been the same. The only difference I found between the two was the amount of cursing that came out of my mouth when they came crashing to the ground when someone knocked over the light stands.
Looking at the images, it’s hard to tell what type of equipment was used to create it and the truth is, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is the quality of the image and how it will work with your marketing materials.

Getting up close and personal with my subjects is key to drawing the viewers attention to a specific part of your image. I will watch the motion of the machine, the angles of its components and how the shadows and highlights interact with the equipment as I walk around taking in the environment we have placed it in. A good image can make or break your marketing material and the copy and image have to be relevant to each other or both will lose your customers attention. The main focus of this image is the Hydraulic Breaker in the foreground which is up front in your face while the rest of the machine takes a bit of a backseat but still ads foundation to the image. This is the same formula you should be using for your copy and marketing material. The image is upfront and in your face grabbing the viewers attention and the accompanying text should support and be relevant to the image. It’s a dynamic duo.

I spent a good hour photographing Alicia and her grader while visiting Goldcorp’s Red Lake Mine all the while asking her about her job, background and the mining life she is now a part of. When people love their jobs, the company they work for, and the people they are working with the results show through in the images I create for them.
It’s 2018 and now is the time to refresh your marketing material content and this includes PHOTOGRAPHY. Sounds like bullshit right? Well, it’s not and I am not being biased because I am professional photographer. Just because it’s -32 degrees Celsius outside doesn’t mean we get a day off from doing our jobs. The core samples don’t stack themselves nor do they care what temperature it is. Photographing on site in the cold Winter months does have it’s challenges. Equipment freezes up, batteries drain faster, and fingers go numb. In the Summer months when I am underground at +32 degrees I wish I was topside and in the Winter months on days like today I wish I was underground enjoying the warm humid stale air. In the end though it’s all about getting the job done and being prepared for what the environment has in store that day. We look at the bright side here in Northern Ontario, the 4 seasons always have beauty for us to see, even if our eyeballs are frozen in their sockets.
Recently I found myself at Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine photographing another of Maclean Engineering’s Electric Fleet. I am always thrilled to create images for Macleans and I was even more thrilled to finally find my way underground at Nickel Rim where I was pleasantly surprised by the organization and cleanliness of the mine (yes, I notice everything). While electric vehicles are starting to become more and more popular in the mining industry, testing all the applications and variables for maximum efficiency is still the key factors in R & D. We also see the high-vis workwear of miners and industrial trades people but we rarely see the lab coats. Just as important as getting the payload out of the ground further laboratory testing can determine plant performance, grade quality as well as toxic contents in waste materials. As our science and technology industry is constantly expanding these processes will only become more “refined” to maintain a sustainable medium between all our global industries.

I have photographed the before/after and installation of these lights and the results are “night and day”. I always come across images from past shoots that I like to resurrect again with a little modification. It could be from Vertical to Horizontal, a different angle/composition of the same scene or maybe even a slight change to the facial expression of my subject. The last time I was in Popular River Saskatchewan I photographed the PRMX 6973 Locomotive which at the time was carrying coal from Popular River to SaskPower’s power plant 19 KM away.
