The Joy Of Komatsu | Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

For the past few years I have photographed many Joy Global’s Mining Fleet  and production here in Northern Ontario.  This past April Joy Global was acquired by Komatsu (read more here) which is another company in which I admire the quality of their products and look forward to hopefully photographing some of their surface equipment as well as the underground.  Along with the quality, the people I have met at Joy have all been a pleasure to work with and photograph.

Mining People | Professional Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

As the sun was high over the rim emphasizing the shadows of the clouds  I thought it was the perfect opportunity to create a portrait of our lead rep on the project.  It was the least I could do since he was at our sides the whole time, organizing location, people and procedures for us while we were on and off site.  All the ingredients were there for something visual in what most might deem a very mundane environment but to me I see “impact” all around me.  I stole a few minutes to find the right angle for a background that wasn’t too distracting but added to the story of the main subject even though I knew the green of Brads jacket will always bring the viewers attention back to him.

40 Under Forty | Mining Indudtrial Photographer James Hodgins

40 Under Forty

A few months ago I had photographed Theresa Nyabeze and Gilbert Lamarche for Vale and their #40underforty achievement.
I have photographed these 2 individuals in the past and it was a pleasure to do so again for an accomplishment such as this.

The 40 Under Forty Awards bring recognition to those that bring positive changes to their industry and to the community.

Congratulations again Theresa & Gilbert, well deserved.

Shooting The Shotcrete Sprayer | Professional Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

The Shotcrete Sprayer is another interesting piece of machinery to photograph.  Like a boom arm of the jumbo the sprayer arm can articulate in a wide range of motion to cover the maximum amount of space in which it is working in.  This Maclean Shotcrete Sprayer was just in transition to moving to another area of the mine so I didn’t capture it in action during this project but I am sure I will come across an opportunity to see it in action above or below the surface.

Blasting My Bucket List | Professional Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

While I was on my latest project I had the chance to scratch off a few things from my photo bucket list.  Yes I have one of those and I am constantly adding stuff to it as the years go on.  Recently I had the chance to watch a controlled blast at the Copper Mountain Mine just outside of Princeton British Columbia.  We had a great vantage point high up on the opposite side of the pit where we had a birds eye view of the whole event.  I have photographed many things in the explosive industry but this was the first time I was able to witness the finished explosion.  I hope in the future I can get the opportunity to create some unique visuals using the blast as a sub focal point.  Yes, the brain was ticking immediately after this event.

The Sting Of The Scorpion | Sudbury Mining Photographer James Hodgins

The Scorpion bulk explosives loader can efficiently pump the emulsion to heights over 28ft from the ground.  This was the first client of mine in the “Explosive” sector of the mining industrial industry where I photographed the Scorpion  doing what it does best.   The operator would control the boom and loading nose that can pivot and turn to a precise angle which in motion looks like a Stinger from a scorpion. It’s an impressive piece of equipment to photograph  and I hope I come across another and push some creative images into my mix.

Sudbury Mining Industrial Photographer James Hodgins

I love capturing the industrial scene after the sun goes down.  It takes on a whole new vibe that rarely gets the attention it deserves.  Sure it’s hard to capture things on the fly with minimal ambient light that “might” be available but that is part of the challenge of creating an image with impact.  You might have to capture the image at a different angle depending on what light source is already available or bring in another truck and flick on the headlights to light up the remaining part of the scene.

Surveyors and Geologists that get the least amount of camera time.

With all the years I have been photographing sites across North America it’s the Surveyors and Geologists that get the least amount of camera time.  I plan on changing that.

Surveyors for Cementation setup their precision equipment at Gowest Golds Bradshaw site.  During a site visit I strategically plan out the operations that are happening that day so the photography can overlap each of the different departments that make up the companies team.    By the end of the day the company will have a variety of custom images of the project along with social media “fillers” of the day to day operations.  Photography on your website gallery or corporate presentations should be eye catching, slightly dramatic and though provoking.  Specific images are created for the marketing materials needed while  background components, composition and lighting  are pre-planned depending on the final media output.  Contact www.miningindustrialphotographer.com to start your custom photography portfolio.  The struggling to find high impact images for your marketing materials is a real thing.
